On the Road (Part VII)

8:00PM The last few hours of the trip are always the most difficult. Normally during the evening I need to take a nap, but my energy level seems higher than normal and I don’t feel “tired” at all. I just want this trip to be over! My husband calls asking when we should stop for gas. I know I can make without stopping, but the truck is a huge gas guzzler. Since our son has recently filled his diaper, the stench motivates me to want to stop as soon as possible.

8:30PM We finally come across a gas station that’s just off the interstate. We stop. My husbands starts fueling the truck and my sister and I run in to change the baby’s dirty diaper. During this stop I also make sure that my husband gets the cheese, hummus, and carrot sticks. He is very grateful. I guess he didn’t know we had these items with us in the car. It will be getting dark soon and I really want to get back on the road so the stop is fairly short.

9:00PM It’s getting dark. I absolutely despise driving in the dark, but it must be done. I try to use my high beams as much as possible but there is a significant amount of traffic so I flip them on and off a lot.

9:30PM It’s really dark and now there is road work which is never fun but it is especially challenging in the dark. The high beams come in handy! I’m getting that nasty nauseated feeling again. My sister finds the raisin bread for me to eat, but I know it’s not going to tide me over for long. I have my sister call my one of my even younger sisters to ask her if she can make seven-grain pancakes for our arrival. She happily agrees and says she can’t wait to see us!

10:00PM Finally our long all-day trip is finally over. We quickly exit the vehicles and are greeted by three of my younger sisters and my dad. My little sister has seven grain pancakes waiting for us. Time to relax for a bit!
