U.S. Marshals seized foods in a Durham, N.C. warehouse last month due to rodent infestation. According to a press release from the FDA, upon a request from the FDA, U.S. Marshals were sent into the warehouse to seize foods considered adulterated by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The FDA made the order after a late July through early August inspection.

While the actions may seem dramatic, the FDA reports are equally so.

According to the FDA press release:

An FDA inspection from July 25, 2011 through Aug. 3, 2011 found evidence of an active and widespread rodent infestation in CFSD, Inc.s warehouse. FDA investigators observed rodent nesting sites, numerous rodent excreta pellets on and around food products, rodent gnawed containers of food, as well as one live and eight dead rodents in the vicinity of food product storage. They also observed food product spills, open boxes of food, rotten food items, trash throughout the facility, and noted many potential entryways for pests, including open doors, gaps in doors, broken windows and a hole in the outside wall.

If thats not hard to swallow, I dont know what is. A similar situation happened last December, when U.S. Marshals were requested at a New Mexico warehouse owned by Duran and Sons LLC in Derry, N.M. due to rodent infestation. Cheers to taking serious actions as a result of serious food safety threats. I hope these guys learn a big lesson or better, get out of the food manufacturing business.
